Springtime signals the start of spring cleaning but also the start of a new seasonal wardrobe. It's a time for shedding the winter layers and decluttering unwanted clothes; transitioning outfits from one season into the next for a fresh perspective on fashion.
Whether it's a wardrobe designed for wearing all year-round or a seasonal capsule tailored to specific weather conditions, the capsule wardrobe method encourages a clutter-free and purposeful approach to personal style. It's a concept that prioritises signature looks over fleeting trends, where less is more—quite literally!
If you want to make more intentional fashion choices, adopt sustainable shopping habits, and experiment with creative outfit styling; spring is the perfect time to start a capsule wardrobe.
What is a seasonal capsule wardrobe?
An all-year capsule wardrobe is a collection of versatile clothes that can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits using a minimal number of pieces.
A seasonal capsule wardrobe is specifically designed for a particular season with clothing items chosen based on the different weather conditions and seasonal holidays. The purpose of a seasonal mini-capsule is to create a compact collection of clothes to suit the current season.
Creating a seasonal capsule not only helps adapt outfits to evolving fashion trends and weather conditions to maximise the number of times an item is worn. It also encourages a more creative approach to personal style by creating a wardrobe that is functional, seasonal, and stylish.
How do you build a seasonal capsule wardrobe?
Building a seasonal capsule wardrobe follows the same process as creating an all-year capsule wardrobe except it's tailored to a specific season. It involves identifying seasonal staples, like tops, bottoms, outerwear, and shoes. Then choosing a few statement pieces, jewellery and accessories to add interest.
Set a capsule wardrobe size that suits your needs and preferences. Anywhere between 20-40 items is ideal for a seasonal capsule wardrobe. Choose items based on their versatility and stick to a clearly defined wardrobe colour palette. This will make it easier to maximise the number of outfits that can be made from a minimal number of clothes.

The whole point of a capsule is to slow down purchases (even thrifted ones!) in order to carefully curate a wardrobe that's easy and enjoyable to wear. After having a capsule wardrobe for over 10 years, I've reached a point where I've clearly identified my personal style, I know what I like to wear, and what works for me.
For this spring capsule wardrobe, I'm trying not to be swayed by my style inspiration. While a few items in my wardrobe have worn out and might need replacing, like my trench coat. I'm not actively looking to add any new pieces. I want to enjoy the clothes I already own rather than adding more and more things to it unnecessarily.
A wardrobe declutter at the start of spring has helped weed out the clothes I haven't worn and knew I wouldn't wear. These not-quite-right items were sold on Vinted and the money has been added to a pot for future purchases—when and if I need them.
This is my spring capsule wardrobe for 2024. Green? For spring? Ground-breaking, I know! But the black and green colour combination is my kind of dopamine dressing, and it's perfect for springtime—even if it is an obvious choice.
I've started to choose a perfume to accompany each of my seasonal capsules wardrobes. Amber Floral perfumes give a fresh yet comforting scent, ideal for transitioning from winter to spring.
For this spring capsule wardrobe I've chosen my current favourite, Tom Ford Café Rose. Although I'm sure I'll be wearing Tom Ford Lost Cherry just as much. Both have a rich, dynamic fragrance suitable for spring's changeable weather. Although as the days get warmer, something light and fresh might be more suitable, like Diptyque Philosykos.

How to update a wardrobe for spring
To update a wardrobe for spring, start by decluttering and storing away any clothes that won't be needed in warmer weather. Heavy coats, thick knits, and rain boots can all be replaced with spring-appropriate essentials, like trench coats, thin cardigans, and comfortable footwear.
Embrace the season's aesthetic with brighter colours, spring prints, and floral jewellery. But don't pack away any accessories that may come in handy during unpredictable weather, like hats, scarves, and gloves.
Before buying anything new, pull together some style inspiration and try to recreate outfits using the clothes you already own. Only then, once you have a firm idea of what your wardrobe is missing, should you go shopping for new pieces.
