Now that summer is here, beach holidays are back. Whether you're travelling to a secluded place or exploring somewhere closer to home, it's time to start prepping a packing list. The key to a good travel capsule wardrobe is versatility. That's especially true for a beach holiday where comfort really is key.
I've put together a beach travel capsule for my own slow travel adventures this summer, and I'm sharing exactly what I've packed. This is how to build a travel capsule wardrobe with the ideal number of clothes for a 10-day trip.
How many clothes do I need for a 10 day holiday?
All capsule wardrobes should be put together based on the weather, the location, what you feel comfortable wearing and how light you like to travel. A good rule of thumb is to pack 3 dresses, 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 pair of shoes, and a few accessories including jewellery. This doesn't include the outfit you travel in!
Using this compact travel capsule wardrobe formula, everything can fit into a backpack. It offers enough variation—with some outfit repeating!—so you won't feel stuck for outfits ideas. However, you will need to pick wisely if you want your travel wardrobe to be versatile.

A Travel Capsule for a 10-Day Beach Holiday
Wherever the location, whatever the weather; having enjoyable clothing to wear makes travelling a whole lot easier. Choosing practical outfits with items that can be mixed and matched in a variety of combinations to maximise on luggage space is crucial.
Whenever I'm putting together a travel capsule wardrobe, I always focus on comfortable clothing that make realistic outfits I would actually wear. Familiar items I've worn countless times and can rely on to be practical to wear and easy to style.
A holiday is not the time to test out brand new clothes that have never been worn before. If you don't know how an outfit will feel after several wears, you're asking for trouble! A new pair of shoes may rub, a shirt might gape, and that dress could be see-through, and you won't know until you get there.
Putting together an appropriate travel capsule wardrobe is especially important for a beach holiday—dressing for the heat is hard enough already without fussing over uncomfortable outfit choices!
When it comes to dressing for the heat, I prefer linen co-ords, oversized shirts and maxi skirts, and midi dresses. Minimal jewellery is essential, as is a big sun hat and sunglasses. I've found I can travel comfortably with just one pair of shoes, and in summer that means footbed sandals!
Travelling light might be a little daunting for anyone who is used to packing a whole suitcase full of clothing. But it all comes down to planning outfits and picking versatile items. With the right clothes, it's possible to travel light without ever repeating an outfit!
I like to pack as light as possible and I'm more than happy to repeat outfits, even if that means doing laundry while I'm on holiday. So my travel capsules tend to be on the compact side with less than 10 items of clothing plus a few accessories.
You may want to expand on this depending on how comfortable you are with repeating outfits and whether you want the hassle of washing clothes while you're away! Only pack the items you know how to style and are comfortable to wear on holiday.
This is a travel capsule wardrobe for a beach holiday, put together using my current wardrobe. It's meant as a guide to help you create your own summer holiday packing list based on your own personal style using your existing wardrobe. If you don't wear dresses or prefer a bikini over a bathing suit, pack something else instead! Likewise for any other items in this capsule wardrobe.
