One thing that keeps me feeling positive during the dark and gloomy winter months is looking forward to my spring summer capsule wardrobe. After a while the darkness and rain feels never-ending. Seeing the first signs of spring again is thrilling, and compels me to plan for warmer days.
It's almost time to shrug off the heavy layers, oversized coats, and knitwear. Replacing them are lightweight jackets, loose linen shirts, and midi dresses. I'm also excited to start layering necklaces again. Something I'm less inclined to do in winter.
Each new season, I go through and create a Pinterest moodboard with style inspiration. This helps identify the outfits and trends I'm being drawn to. I then pick my capsule items based on this moodboard so that I can recreate outfits from my existing wardrobe. It's a much more sustainable way to follow trends.
This year's spring style inspiration is being dominated by lime green, maxi skirts, and oversized shirts. There's a playfulness coming through in the form of patterns, bold colours, and fun jewellery. Like these enamel necklaces. I'm looking forward to having a more dramatic wardrobe this spring!
Even though I'll be putting together a capsule wardrobe each season, I'm taking a slightly new approach. Capsule wardrobes are helpful. But they can feel prescriptive, and often become boring when options are dwindled down to the same few items.
Each capsule wardrobe features the most seasonally appropriate items from my wardrobe. When it comes to getting dressed, it's important to wear whatever feels most compelling. Even if it's not specifically included in the current season's capsule.
For example, I've included a lime vest in my spring capsule. But really it's a placeholder for any knitted vest I own. It can be swapped for whichever one best suits the outfit - or my mood - on any given day. I find this is a much more useful approach to capsule wardrobe dressing.
