As someone who is vegan with a dog who enjoys travelling; finding dog-friendly vegan restaurants is all part of the fun. A great thing about putting together these slow travel guides is it helps with my own dog-friendly travel plans. I get to hunt out all the best places to visit, and then share them with you.
First up is Margate, featuring all the dog-friendly restaurants, cafés, coffee shop, and bakeries serving vegan-friendly food.
Forts
Just a short walk up from the Turner Contemporary, you'll find Forts. This must-visit café serves the perfect cup of coffee. Although their menu is small it changes regularly and they always have a delicious vegan option. It's always busy; on our first attempt to visit, we couldn't get a seat. Trying again on a weekday mid-morning, we managed to grab a table before it got busy. The service is relaxed and friendly, and our dog was made to feel very welcome.
Cliffs
This café is both a restaurant and record shop. Cliffs has a real community feel with regular events and fundraisers for the local residents. They serve everything from full breakfasts to coffee and cake, with vegan-friendly options. We grabbed a coffee and cake but there are larger options on the menu. Dogs are welcome whether you're shopping for records or stopping by for brunch. There's plenty of space here making it ideal for larger groups.
Palm's Pizza
The New York style pizza here is served by the slice alongside beer, cider, and soft drinks. Palm's Pizza is a great option for lunch on the go to be eaten on the beach or for a quick bite inbetween bars—which is what we did! There's a couple of classic vegan options and dips plus shots while you wait for the pizza to cook. I ordered a slice of the vegan special alongside a pickleback shot—both delicious!
Wildes
This gorgeous brunch spot in Margate's old town serves coffee and cocktails with excellent vegan menu options. There is plenty of seating outside and a wonderfully decorated interior if you prefer to sit indoors. Wildes is so dog-friendly they'll greet your companion with a fresh bowl of water with treats on the side. We ordered a Pineapple Poke Bowl, Fresh Roast Corn, and Dressed Tortilla Chips. Alongside a Salted Espresso Martini and Spicy Tommie's Margarita, which were both excellent.
The Greedy Cow
If you're looking for classic family food that's simple yet delicious, The Greedy Cow is the ideal spot especially for families. It's a super popular café in the heart of the old town so tables get taken up fast. The outdoor seating is perfect for eating lunch and people watching on a sunny day. The menu has a few vegan-friendly options, and dogs are allowed both indoors and outside.
The above restaurants have been tried and tested by me so I can attest to how good they are. However, there are a few restaurants in Margate that I haven't yet had the chance to visit. They're all dog-friendly with vegan options on their menus. I'll update this post when I've paid them a visit.
The Bus Cafe
Street food served from a double decker bus. The Bus Cafe uses fresh produce from local farms and organisations to make up their seasonal dishes. On the menu are classics with a twist, such as the vegan hangover breakfast, crumpet slider, and sourdough sarnies. Dogs aren't allowed on the bus but can dine with you outside.
Margate Coffee Shed
Right on the sea front you'll find this cute little cafe serving locally sourced food and flat whites (made with Minor Figures oat milk!) They host host regular community events, such as their monthly coffee mornings and journaling club.
DIVE
DIVE is a unique restaurant both in style and location. The dog-friendly outdoor-only seating provides great views of the Turner Contemporary and Main Sands—so long as the weather stays nice! The menu offers a selection of 'Los Angeles-inspired Mexican cuisine,' although vegan options are limited.
Rose In June
A haunted dog-friendly pub serving vegan options? Count me in! Rose In June is a classic family-friendly pub with a modern interior. The simple menu rotates with the chef but there's always a vegan-friendly option available. Reviews love the chill atmosphere and friendly service.
Sargasso
You'll need to book to get a table at Sargasso. But well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at this wine bar serving a snack menu alongside larger seasonal dishes. For the menu to be vegan-friendly, you'll need to ask the chef to adapt the dishes. From the window bar stools you'll be seated at if you dined as a couple, you'll get a wonderful view out over the sea.
Seaside Kitchen
Seaside Kitchen is Kent's first all vegan Café serving everything from loaded fries to pretzl buns to mac n cheese. In their patisserie on Lombard Street you'll find cupcakes, macarons, and battenberg. It's also one of the few places that offer a vegan afternoon tea.
Staple Bakery
Not a restaurant per se but one worth keeping on the list nonetheless. Staple does serve a very small menu with a vegan-friendly option although they are mainly a bakery. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any vegan cakes on the menu but their sourdough bread looks excellent.
Curve Roasters
The interior of the Curve Roasters cafe looks super cute. They serve a seasonal range of coffee alongside a really delicious sounding menu. There are vegan options on the menu, and dogs are welcome to join you while you eat. Lots of restaurants around Margate use Curve Roasters coffee because it's so good, and I can't wait to try it.
