Attingham Park

Attingham Park - Dog-Friendly Walks

Attingham Park is an 18th-century estate in Shrewsbury with 200 acres of parkland and a Georgian Mansion. There is a restored Walled Garden, two-acre orchard, and historic pleasure grounds to explore. Along with a 400 acre deer park and numerous walking routes through woodland.

Attingham Park is a three pawprint rated National Trust property, making it one of the best places to visit with your dog. There are clearly signed dog walking routes with a designated off-lead area. Water bowls can be found at the cafe, along with 'paw-friendly' toilets.

Even on a cold autumn day, Attingham Park was busy with visitors and their companions. Although once you put a little distance between yourself and the mansion by following one of the four looping trails, you quickly get out of earshot of the noisy courtyard.

Although we knew it was forecast to rain on the day we visited, we didn't know quite how much rain would fall. About halfway around our planned route there was a torrential downpour. Despite our attempts to take shelter under the trees, all three of us ended up soaked through.

We had to cut our planned 3 mile route short, taking a quicker trail through the deer park that circled back to the mansion. If we'd stuck to our original plans, we may have come across some of the fungi we were looking for. Although we did spot a few puffballs and waxcap mushrooms.

We headed straight home after a quick stop at the cafe for a hot drink, having to skip the rest of the estate. I imagine the gardens would look stunning when in bloom, and I'm curious to see the inside of the mansion. It closes during November and reopens in December for pre-bookable festive visits only.

Despite the rain cutting our trip short, Attingham Park truly is one of the best dog-friendly National Trust properties I've visited so far. I would love to revisit on a better day, perhaps in spring or early autumn, when I can enjoy the estate in all its glory.
