A Week Of Sustainable Outfits: Winter

A Week Of Sustainable Outfits For Winter

The weather in the UK this winter has been cold yet, thankfully, (mostly) dry. It's dipped below zero a few times with a little flurries of snow here and there. In general, this winter has been incredibly mild and I've got my fingers crossed spring, with its lovely bright skies, will arrive soon. I'm so done with winter!

While it's nice to put together seasonal capsule wardrobes, tweaks are inevitable. I ">thrifted a couple of new items, which were put into immediate rotation, while older clothes gained new places in my wardrobe. Like my trench coat, that I've had over a decade. It was moved to my occasion-wear capsule, and replaced with a thrifted vintage coat inspired by my style mood board.

Other items needed some TLC with a few minor repairs. I've always thought winter was the harshest season on our clothing, and this year it's caused noticeable wear and tear. It was a sad day when I discovered the frayed fabric on my Linen Fox Midi Dress. Thankfully the repairs were easy, although it highlighted just how quickly clothes can degrade when you wear them regularly.

Keeping track of how I styled my capsule clothes with these sustainable outfits really shows the wear I get out of my minimal wardrobe, and how it changes through the seasons. I've started taking actual outfit of the day videos now, follow @imsophiedavies and @omchofficial.

I want to have a bit more fun with my wardrobe without taking risks I'll regret. I believe it's possible to follow trends in a sustainable way, as long as you buy clothes you'll wear even once the trend has passed. I love that vests have made a comeback, and the Lazy Oaf Happy Sad Vest fits right into my wardrobe. I'm having a lot of fun styling it in different ways.

I've worn this outfit the most during winter. Despite thrifting the Vintage Richards Coat and Ralph Lauren Turtleneck only in mid-December, I've worn them both consistently ever since. With the coat layered over the Linen Fox Maxi Dress and the thick Ralph Lauren Turtleneck underneath, chunky boots or loafers and thick socks; this is one of the warmest outfits in my winter capsule. My favourite layered necklace combination is the Medallion Necklace with Ball Necklace. I keep these on my necklace detangler for ease of wear.

  • Vintage Coat from Richards (thrifted, 2021)
  • Vintage Tie-Neck Jumper from Unknown (thrifted, 2022)
  • Wide Leg Trousers from MUJI (purchased, 2018)
  • Bee Earrings from OMCH
  • Crossbody Bag from Everlane (gifted, 2020)
  • Loafers from Grenson (gifted, 2020)

Another thrifted purchased that I immediately started wearing is a vintage tie-neck jumper. It's smart yet comfortable, and goes so well with these wide leg trousers. I wore this to work in the studio but it would also be a great outfit for dinner or drinks with friends. I'm looking forward to wearing this with heels (or in my case, platform sandals) and a pretty bag for spring.

  • Swing Turtleneck from COS (thrifted, 2021)

Another thrifted coat purchased with help from my winter style inspiration, this one is ridiculously oversized and looks excellent with turned up chinos and a huge knitted scarf. It's a casual outfit that's fun to wear; practical and warm for the cold weather, and makes me feel good. I've also worn this outfit with my Everlane Rain Boots on dog walks. The shades of green broken up by the black look wonderful together.

Pinterest is such a powerful tool for wardrobe planning. My style inspiration boards have helped me to find a colour palette that actually works. I've fully embraced the olive tones that work so well with the rest of my mostly black wardrobe. This outfit in particular was a favourite of mine.

I try to finish up in the studio as quickly as possible on a Friday so I can start the weekend early. Although this runs the risk of favouring comfort over style, and ending up in loungewear far too early.. The reason I love second-hand knitwear so much is because you can find gems like this vintage turtleneck. It keeps outfits interesting without sacrificing cosiness.

After a really long week, we headed to a local wine bar and this is what I wore. I dipped into my occasionwear capsule, and mixed it with my winter wardrobe. The Everlane Corduroy Mini Dress is my go-to special occasion dress, and it's proving to be surprisingly versatile. I paired it with a sleeveless vintage turtleneck and Snag tights to keep warm. I would also like it noted that I would never wear my coat like this outside of the house–it was purely for the photo!
