In the UK, we will most likely be spending all of spring indoors and that makes me so very sad. It didn’t feel right to create a spring capsule that I’m most likely not going to get to wear so I'm skipping it this year, and instead I'm sharing something more useful: a capsule wardrobe for working from home.
If you’re one of the many people who have found themselves unable to physically go to work and needing to build a new daily routine that includes working from home, you might find this capsule particularly useful. After 7 years of being self-employed, splitting my time between my home office and studio, I’ve figured out a few things that make working from home a whole lot easier. One of which is getting the balance right between being comfortable and yet ready for work - it's a fine line.
You might find yourself able to maintain your productivity and motivation while wearing pyjamas or sweatpants - I cannot. Getting ‘properly’ dressed is a must as it helps me to step into a work mindset and stay there. Having said that, comfort is a priority so you won’t find any crisp shirts or pencil skirts in this capsule.
This is my working from home capsule that I wear when I’m staying indoors, in the office or studio. It’s practical yet comfortable, and takes all the struggle out of deciding what to wear when your home has suddenly become your work space.
T-Shirts
Despite T-Shirts being super low effort, they can pass for workwear if you pick a neutral colour and good fit. I love Everlane’s Boxy Cut Tees. They’re ever so slightly cropped with a relaxed fit, which means they look good whether you tuck them in or wear them loose - depending on how put together you want to feel. The cotton is super soft and super comfortable, which is exactly what you need when you’re stuck at your desk. Organic Basics make great cotton t-shirts too, I have them in both black and white.
Culottes or Maxi Skirt
Wearing a pair of wide leg trousers or a maxi skirt instantly makes me feel dressy without the effort. Paired with a shirt and you’ve got an office-appropriate outfit; worn at home with a t-shirt, you’ve got the ideal comfortable at-home work uniform. MUJI make fantastic loose-fitting clothing that are perfect for working from home. I also recommend their sleeveless dresses, which are easy to wear and look great layered.
Knitwear
A chunky cardigan or jumper you can throw over the top of your outfit is a must. My knitwear drawer is full of second-hand jumpers but second-hand shopping might not be so easy to do right now. If you’re looking for sustainably-made new options, I recommend the Everlane Chunky Cardigan or Know The Origin Cropped Jumper. In spring or summer, something lighter like the Dorsu Cardigan, which fits more like a thin jacket, is ideal for warmer weather.
Leggings
If you can’t be bothered to wear ‘proper’ trousers or a skirt, leggings are your best friend. Choose the right pair and they’ll look relatively smart but will be undoubtedly more comfortable. Girlfriend Collective leggings are just as good whether you wear them to workout in or to work at your desk. They’re thick and look more like activewear so if you need something smarter, try the Everlane Performance Leggings.
Socks
I’ve tried all kinds of sustainably-made socks and there’s one brand that comes out on top every time: Organic Basics. Their socks are cosy yet durable, and come in both standard and ankle size. Need something thicker? Try the Organic Basics Tennis Socks. You can save up to 20% off with bundles too and get 10% off your order with my code: ACONOBC4.
Shoes
If you have to leave the house, Birkenstock sandals with or without a pair of chunky socks depending on the weather is good enough to run whatever errands you have. Super comfortable and low effort yet ugly-chic so you’ll get away with it. Throw on a duster jacket and you’re good to go.
Jewellery
Jewellery is the accessory that completes an outfit, and just because you're working from home doesn't mean you can't wear it. There's something special about putting on a necklace and earrings or set of rings that pulls a look together. Wearing something simple like a minimal necklace, stacking rings, or tiny studs are the ideal choice for an at-home-but-still-working outfit. There's currently 10% off at Oh My Clumsy Heart with the code: HOPEFUL.
